Mistakes Parents Make...UPDATE

So I think we figured out why dinner time has been such a struggle lately. It wasn't just the tuna fish thing...Maelin does NOT like to sit in her chair and eat dinner. She's just way too busy. She'd rather run around as we shovel one bite in at a time.

However, at restaurants, she's perfect. Eats everything we put in front of her and is quiet and cute about it too. I talked w/ her doctor who advised against doing the "Deceptively Delicious" Jessica Seinfeld thing because she says if you do that, kids never learn the texture and true taste of vegetables.

Kevin and I decided that we're going to start every dinner out w/ Maelin sitting at her chair and then if she doesn't eat (or eats very little) we'll let her out and we'll feed her as she runs around. We decided this could just be a phase and we'll let it run its course.

I'm sure it's just a phase. It won't be an issue when she's 3 and can understand that "we all sit at the table for dinner". I wouldn't worry about it awful much. I would maybe try incentives to get her to sit at the table a couple times a week and maybe slowly she'll be more interested to sit for that long. Maybe a dessert that she loves... but she can only have if she sits at the table. That kind of thing.

From what I understand, the Deceptively Delicious method is more to make sure they get the nutrition of fruits and veggies in their little bodies, but not to replace introducing fruits and veggies to them. So even though her mac & cheese has pureed yellow squash or carrots blended in it and her mashed potatoes are mixed with cauliflower, there are still carrots or whichever veggies preferred still put on the dinner table to try as well.

I gotta tell you that it is easier at this age if you can stay consistent and make her sit in her chair to eat... letting her out gives mixed signals I think. Manners are pretty important and kids at that age are much smarter than you think. My biggest pet peeve to this day is eating at a table with kids running around it. It will all pass! Promise. :) Good luck and keep us posted.
