Busy Weekend...Without Baby! :-(

Those of you who know me well know that I HATE doing anything without Maelin. Call it Working-Mommy Guilt, call it obsession, call it whatever you want but I hate being without my little one when I don't have to be.

It's been a real struggle to remember that I have a life too and Maelin deserves other people in her life besides me. Her life will be so much richer for the experiences and knowledge that other people can give to her. She can only get that if I'm not around.

So, even though I'm sick at the thought of missing even a minute of my precious time with Miss MaeMae before she's all grown up, I'm doing what I hope! good mommies do and I'm going this weekend to have some fun without Maelin.

Saturday morning at 7am: White Water Rafting!!! One of the best reasons to live in CO is this sport. Never mind I crushed my left knee in 1995 doing this...it's sooooo much fun and I can't wait. My dad has some friend who's a certified rafting guide and he's offered to take us (Dad, Jean, my sister Heather, Jeff, Kat, Kevin and I) rafting down Brown's Canyon on Saturday for FREE. Super great deal!! Only problem is that rafting isn't the best place for a very curious 15 month old. So my good friend Kate has graciously offered to babysit Maelin for the day.

I chose Kate to watch her because Andrew is Kate's son (Maelin's best friend) and Kate loves Maelin like I do and we've hung out this summer so Maelin is somewhat comfortable with her. I think she'll have a great time over there.

Throw a wrench in the plans...Kate suggested Maelin spend Friday night at their house so we don't have to get up at 5am to drive her up there and still meet the gang at 7am. No way! I said at first. I'd miss her way too much! Kate was very sweet and said she knew that, but it would be better for everyone to get enough sleep and Maelin would be just fine.

As I thought about it I wondered what I was worried/afraid about...I knew Maelin would be fine. She's sleeping through most nights now. If she wakes up, she usually cries for about 10 minutes then puts herself back to sleep so I wasn't worried about that. I knew she'd be well taken care of over there and she'd have a blast playing with the other kids. So what WAS I worried about???

I'd miss her. It's that simple. I didn't want her to spend the night because even though she's sleeping right now and I'm not with her, I know she's there and I can go smooth her hair or watch her sleep. I was (and still am) dreading walking by her empty room on my way to bed and thinking about how my little baby isn't in her crib.

That's a selfish reason to wake up Kate and Maelin that early. So I decided to do one of many (I'm sure) unselfish things where Maelin is concerned: she's going to spend the night at Kate and Andrew's house and I know she's going to have a blast!

Keep your fingers crossed that I don't drive myself crazy. Maybe I should up my drugs... :-)

So that's our Saturday. We won't get back into town till late on Sat night and then on Sunday morning (bright and early) we have Katey's Bridal Shower Brunch! I am very excited about this shower for a few reasons: we are so thrilled for Katey, a gay guy is her best friend, man-of-honor and he's hosting the shower at a place in Denver where a drag queen is going to wait on us!!! He went down there and hand-picked the queen himself so it's going to be a crazy fun time!

That's our busy weekend. I'll try to post pics of the rafting trip and of the shower when I get back...send some positive "you're-doing-the-right-thing" vibes my way tomorrow night!!

Nadas Anyone???

SOOOOOOO much fun! I know many of you have heard me talk about this band before but really, if you haven't seen them in person yet, you MUST try to get to a show!

Even though my mom was in town this weekend, she wanted to help babysit the little princess so Christina and I could go catch my favorite band to see live on Sat night at the Little Bear in Evergreen. The Nadas are a great, fun and very entertaining (not to mention CUTE) boy band from Iowa that have been playing together for over 15 years. Kevin describes them as "non offensive rock." I like to say they are "fun bar rock" but any way you describe them works. Mainly they play good ole' rock and roll and they are a very tight, experienced and talented group.

The Little Bear is the best place (outside of Red Rocks of course) to see a show in CO. It's awesome. We got a table in the front and we were literally 5 feet away from the band the entire show. During the breaks, the guys come out and mingle with the crowd. I've been so often (yes, I'm a bit of a groupie) that I've even been to a few of their "After-Parties" and they recognize me and we usually chat for a bit before or after the shows.

Christina and I had a great time. It was so much fun to be out and about and doing stuff that I used to do all the time (pre-Maelin). If you're in the mood for some fun boy-band-music, check out The Nadas. I hope you like them!

Christina and I dancing and enjoying our time out. We had a great time!

Our Gorgeous Girl

I think this picture speaks for itself. MaeMae's new game (thanks to Uncle Jeff) is to crawl inside this basket that was supposed to be used for toy storage and then someone picks her up and flies her around in it.

She loves the game and every time we put toys in the basket, she crawls over to it and "Uhh...Uhhh...." and pulls the toys out so she can get in it.

It's super cute.

We took this picture of her in her "spaceship" the other day and it struck me how totally gorgeous our little girl is. Neither Kevin nor I is this good-looking so she must get it from Grandma Lea or Papa Dan or someone cause it's shocking to me that she is so darn cute! (not that I'm prejudiced or anything :-)

A Few New House Pics

I realized that if I wait till the house is totally unpacked, painted, put away and set up before I posted pictures of it, it would happen in the year 2025. It's just impossible to do everything when you're chasing a 1 year old around the house. She doesn't care that that box needs to be unpacked...she wants to go outside and swing, darn it!!

So I'm letting go (a little bit) of my control-freak nature and surrendering to the fact that my house will probably not be perfect (ie: clean and painted and set up the way I envision it) for at least a few months.

That being said, here are a few pictures of our new house! Ta-Da!!! :-) (you can click on any of these pics to make them bigger)

This is our new backyard. Keep in mind that I'm not even standing at the edge of it...our yard is huge and there's a hill that goes down to our property line which is where I am with the camera. I'm on the hill about 15 feet away from our property line. Won't Maelin have fun here as she grows up??? The door all the way to the right is the garage door and then the kitchen door and then you see the dining room windows and our bedroom window.

This is a view of our patio that I LOVE...I love hanging out here and Maelin has a blast on her new swing that Daddy and Grandpa Terry set up for her. I've also had some girlfriends over a few times and we've hung out here at night with the candles and a glass (or two!) of wine watching the lights of the city. You can see the city to the right of our house and the mountains over the hill. The sunsets are amazing.

Anyone who's been to our old house knows why I put this picture here...we've never had a proper place to eat before!!! A real dining room! It's very exciting...or it will be when I get it painted. I want to do a chair rail, crown molding and a mocha-coffee color eventually. Anyone wanna come help paint?? :-)

Aaaaaaahhhhhh....a proper basement playroom for Maelin. This is my favorite part of this whole new house. She now has a place all her own for her toys, to run around, to do art projects (thanks for the table Kate!!) and to just trash as she sees fit. It's wonderful. We also put the TV and a few chairs down here so we have something to do while we're all hanging together. I'm eventually going to paint this room and make it more fun but it's GREAT for now.

View of the wonderful basement playroom from the other side. It's not designed as well as I'd like (okay, it's super handy and whoever designed the layout of the basement must have been high on something) but we're going to fix it eventually. It's totally liveable for now. (Gizmo is a big fan of the carpet too...)

Okay, that's it for now. I will post some more after I get a bit more organized...or if you want to see it and these pictures didn't do it for you, stop on by! We have a great patio where we can all hang out now!!

School Supplies Already?!?!

I saw it yesterday. It put a ball of dread in my stomach as I thought about what it means...

The first Back-to-School commercial of the season.

That means I don't have much time left with my little one. The days of sleeping till 8am, hanging out in our jammies, making pancakes and laughing at how she shovels them into her mouth, going to the park, children's museum, pool, lunch with friends, lunch with Kevin at his work, napping together and playing outside for as long as we want are coming to an end...quickly.

I have to report back on August 15. I still have some good time left with baby girl. My mom is coming to visit this weekend and in August, Aunt Kat, Maelin and I are going to Seattle for 5 days to visit Auntie Vanessa so we've got a lot planned to keep us busy.

That's the problem. The busier you are, the quicker it goes.

I remember the post I wrote about this last year. I think I was much more depressed about it then because MaeMae was still so little and I was pumping every 4 hours but I'm very sad about having to leave her with someone else for 7-8 hours every single day. Maelin has a good time at Sandra's but it's just not the same.

If anyone has any tips of how to slow down time, please send them my way.

Our New House

I am going to take some pics soon of our new house but I've wanted to wait until we got more boxes put away. It's going pretty well. We've got the basement set up for baby to play and my mom (Nana) is coming to visit on Friday from MN so we're working on the guest room today so she has a place to sleep.

Kat helped me paint the kitchen a very bright yellow which was the only color that wouldn't clash with the weird counters and floor. It looks nice, but I miss my red kitchen.
:-( While my mom is here I may try to paint Maelin's room but we'll see if we get to that.

Here is a picture from the park that is a few blocks from our house. It shows how high up we are and if you look closely, you can see downtown from there. That view is all over our neighborhood: including our very own backyard!

I'll post more pics of the house soon...

p.s. Maelin is feeling much better. Right now she's at the gate banging and yelling at it because she wants to come downstairs... :-)

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease...not just for cattle anymore

Yup, our little one has come down with a whopping case of HFM Disease. Who knew? Click on the link if you want to read about what the Center for Disease Control (CDC) says about it if you're interested.

Basically, it's a virus that's pretty serious in kids but doesn't really affect adults too badly. It's transmitted by touching surfaces that the infected person has touched. It causes high fever, headaches, and (this is the best part) painful sores/blisters in the mouth, feet and hands.

Great, huh?

Little Maelin is as cranky as she's ever been. She's been running a 103 degree fever since yesterday and it's awful because the medicine isn't doing anything for her. It doesn't even make a dent in her fever. She needs me to hold her constantly which is so exhausting and it makes me feel terrible because I just can't help her! There's nothing I can do.

She won't eat, won't drink, just sits on my lap and makes a sad, pathetic moaning crying sound all day long. She's constantly on the verge of tears and then she coughs which makes her blisters in her throat hurt which makes her cry which makes her all snotty which makes her cough which makes the whole darn thing start all over again.

I told my sister tonight that I finally have some empathy for people who have "high needs babies" because the past two days have been miserable for Kevin and I with this little girl. She's so sad and there's nothing we can do for her...the virus just has to run it's course.

If you're in the neighborhood and you feel like stopping by to listen to some good crying, come by! You can pass me a tissue. :-)

I'm A Big Walking Girl! (and I like my piggies...)

Maelin has finally hit one of her last milestones...she's officially a toddler!! She took her first steps yesterday but it was only a couple of them and she didn't seem real confident so we let it go.

Then today she and I were playing on the floor and she had her cup of water in one hand and her Elmo Truck (she loves that darn thing) in the other had and lo and behold...the little girl just came toddling right over to me with the biggest smile on her face! It was a good 10 steps without falling down.

I did the big "Big Girl" dance with her and she laughed and giggled and I put her down to see if she'd do it again and yup!!

Our baby girl is walking!!!!

Here's a couple of pictures of our little one taking her first (and 2nd and 3rd and 50th) steps. She has only fallen a few times but she just keeps right on going!!

I have to say...I thought I'd be sad when she started walking because offically my "baby" isn't a baby any more. She's a toddler now and even though we call her our baby, she really isn't. But even though I'm nostalgic for the little 4 month old baby that was so cute and cuddly, Maelin just keeps getting cuter, sweeter and busier as she gets older.

Case in point of this...take a look at this picture of our little "toddler" eating her piggies. She was so proud of herself for this and we were laughing so hard, we were crying. It was during dinner after all...what better time to eat your toes???

OUCH

Okay, so our new house has a few "quirks." One of them is the front door. It's hung wrong. Our friend Jason came and looked at it before we even bought the place and he said it could be fixed, but we just haven't gotten around to it yet.

So it's really hard to open, close and lock the darn door. The deadbolt BROKE off in it last weekend and we couldn't even open the door at all. We had to go in and out of the back door. Kevin was able to fix that and now it locks a bit better but because it's hung wrong (that sounds like it could be dirty but I'm talking about a door...:-), you really have to slam it to get it to shut all the way.

Last Friday I was on my way out the door to see some friends and I was holding Maelin and the very full diaper bag. I slammed the door as hard as I could (as usual) but this time I didn't move fast enough and my foot was still in the door! Guess what happened to my big toe??

Yup. It's falling off.

I have to say...that is the worst pain I have been in in some time. It compared to labor pains. Totally not kidding. Throbbing, shooting pains that didn't go away. I hobbled back into the house and collapsed onto the floor. Luckily, I had the presence of mind not to drop Maelin. She started screaming and crying...just like I was. Poor baby. I think kids really get upset when Mommy is hurt and upset. I sat on the floor trying not to curse like a sailor in front of my sweet girl and sobbing and wondering how the heck this could hurt so bloody much!

I called Kevin and told him he needed to come home...I couldn't even move. My whole leg had shooting pains and Maelin was still crying and upset. My toe was starting to bleed all over the place as well. Then I called the friends I was supposed to meet and they were very sweet: they packed up the food and brought it to me! They stopped by Target on the way for some first-aid supplies because we haven't unpacked that box quite yet.

So long story not-so-short, my toenail is ready to fall off at any point now. It still hurts like a &*@#$@ so I'm keeping it wrapped and it's actually still bleeding now. I'm getting ready to take a shower so I'll clean it and re wrap it but I'm sure I'm going to lose it. It's split all the way down and totally lifted up and stuff keeps coming up from under it. :-(

Too bad I have Katey's shower and wedding coming up...she said I could still go w/ them to get pedicures and maybe the lady could just paint the ugly scab??? Haha.

Oh, and the door still isn't fixed. If you talk to Kevin, tell him to get on that!!

You Have GOT To Try This...

Just one word...YUMMY. You have GOT to try the Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard at DQ this month. We moved within walking distance of a Dairy Queen (one of the benefits of moving to the 'burbs...) and I finally got a chance to go get one last night and all I can say is...

YUMMY.

Best ice cream treat ever. You gotta try it!

Busy Summer Days Part 2

Boy, I just got done going through some of the pictures I've taken lately of the little miss and there sure are a lot of them! This must be one of the most well-documented children ever!

Anyway, here are just a few of the best ones highlighting how much I LOVE being home w/ my little sweetie pie:

Here's Miss MaeMae enjoying her "pool" at our new house. We couldn't find her swimsuit (it was still packed) but that didn't bother her!

Hmmmmm...looks like we finally found the swimsuit but Miss Thing didn't want to wear the bottoms on her bottom. Aren't all the well-dressed babies wearing swimsuits on their heads these days???

Maelin loves Legos but she's just not quite sure how to share them with the other kids. This is at the wonderful Children's Museum and we're lucky that she was one of the few kids in the lego room that day...

Swimming with Auntie Kat and our 5-year-old friends, Jacob and Hannah.

Eating ice cream at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. (hmmmm...maybe "eating" is the wrong word here...)

Naked baby enjoying the 95 degree day at the pool at Papa Dan and Grandma Jean's house (she doesn't like getting in the pool...just walking around it and splashing and making as big a mess as possible. Hence the no-clothes situation)

What a big girl! So proud you can stand up all by yourself and fall and scream bloddy murder! :-)

I love my Uncle Jeff!!

Look what a big girl I am! I can sit and eat all by myself!

Swinging at the park by our new house with daddy. Wheeeeeeeeeee!!!

This is MaeMae's best friend...Andrew. She LOVES him. He goes to daycare with her so they are special friends since they spend all day together during the school year. The minute she sees him she just lights up and squeals. It's the cutest thing in the world

Plumb tuckered out...so is Mommy.

Believe it or not, those weren't even 1/100 of the good pictures. I figured you were getting bored by now so I'll save the rest for another time. Suffice it to say, Maelin and I are having a fabulous summer! I just wish it could go on and on...

Who Does Maelin Look Like? Cast Your Vote!

I'm always getting questioned about who I think Maelin looks like: me, Kevin, Grandmas and Grandpas, Aunts and Uncles, George W., etc.

Here's your chance to take a look at Maelin and tell me who YOU think she looks like. Thanks for your input!

This is MaeMae at the museum playing with the trucks when I told her to share with the other kids. She wasn't real thrilled.

This is Maelin at a mexican resturant by our new house...she so rarely wears a dress these days I had to take a picture of her in it (they're hard to crawl in so even though we have lots of dresses, she doesn't wear them very much)

Take a gander at our little cutie and tell me who you think she looks like!

Busy Summer Days

How I love summer. Maelin and I are having the BEST time. Even with all the moving hassle and trying to get stuff put away, painting, cleaning, etc. we're having a ball. We've been frequent visitors of the Children's Museum (thank goodness for annual passes!), the park, the playset at the mall, Book Babies at the Denver Public Library, Papa Dan's house, Kat's pool and a host of other fun stuff.

I just wish it could go on forever but we still have about 6 weeks left so I'm going to try not to be sad yet and enjoy it while it lasts! We're still working on getting my camera hooked up to the computer for the most recent pics of baby but here are a few of Maelin enjoying her summertime.

This is a picture of Maelin and Daddy playing at the mall. She LOVES this place and it's been so fun to watch her get more courage as she gets older to try the different foods!

This is MaeMae at the "Garden" in the Children's Museum. She loves just crawling around and she's very busy every time we go.

They have a great little slide at the Museum that's just challenging enough for our little one. She LOVES it and doesn't understand that sometimes it's other kids' turns! :-)

This is at a BBQ at Papa Dan's house with Maelin's two older cousins, Mary and Emmie. Can you believe that Mary is driving now??? Next time you see her, be sure to ask her what she did to my poor car that night when I (big fool!) decided it would be a great idea to let her drive around the block!!

This is Maelin and her two cousins, Ryan and Cole sitting at the big kids' table at Papa Dan's house. Maelin LOVES this table...she crawls right up to it and plops down and eats her dinner or snack and stays seated the whole time. What a big girl!

Keep checking back for Busy Summer Days Part 2...we have a lot to show you!!

Happy 1st Anniversary Jeff & Kat!

It's Jeff and Kat's 1st anniversary today! Here's a few choice pics from their wedding that I had to take off my blog from last year because my computer which has hundreds of pics isn't hooked up yet. Oh well.

Happy Anniversary guys! We love you and we wish you many, many more years together!!

Still Alive...Barely

I know I haven't posted in a while but we just got our Internet service back up and running. It's crazy how out-of-touch you feel when you can't check your email for a few days...I had over 90 emails and 60+ spams while I was gone. Made me feel loved!

So after a TON of drama (basically, the buyer of our house "T"'s mortgage fell through after we had already moved into our new house so for about 20 hours we weren't sure if it was indeed our house or if we were officially squatters). It was horrible. The most stressful 20 hours of our lives. Throw a very active 14 month-old in on top of that and you can imagine what those first few days were like for us.

Thankfully, her mortgage finally went through and we are officially living in the suburbs now! It's kinda weird...we have a garage and a front AND back yard for the first time. Not quite sure what to do with all the space but little Maelin LOVES it. She played for about 3 hours today with Aunt Kat just exploring every inch of the new house. She's having a great time.

Kevin and I are busy trying to unpack, clean, have the electrician, roofer, swamp-cooler guy and handyman here to fix all the random stuff that needs to happen. It always amazes me how much stuff we accumulate. Do we really need a full cabinet of bakeware? How many cookies do I really make? Anyway, we have it and it's exhausting to put away.

I'm really tired so I'm going to bed. I apologize for my absence and I promise that as soon as we hook up my computer and camera and all that I'll post some pics of the new place. So far, we're really enjoying it and starting to settle in.

One cool thing about where we live now: it's in Lakewood, but the area is called Green Mountain because it's on a mountain. So we went for a walk tonight and despite Kevin and I huffing and puffing because of all the freakin' hills, we were up high enough to see the mountains/sunset to one side of us and the city lights to the other side.

Pretty cool.
